경기 북부의 산업 지형을 재편할 핵심 프로젝트로 주목받는 ‘파주 경제자유구역’ 조성이 본격적인 속도를 내고 있다. 

파주시는 바이오 산업을 중심축으로 글로벌 협력 네트워크를 확대하며 미래 성장 동력 확보에 나섰다.

파주시는 지난 2일 서울 중구 한국프레스센터에서 ‘2026 파주 경제자유구역 바이오 컨퍼런스’를 개최하고, 세계적 석학과 글로벌 기업, 국내 연구기관이 참여한 가운데 바이오 산업 중심 도시로의 도약 의지를 공식화했다.

이번 행사는 한국제약바이오협회의 후원으로 마련됐으며, 바이오 산업의 최신 흐름을 공유하고 국제 협력 기반을 강화하는 데 초점이 맞춰졌다.

특히 이날 컨퍼런스에서는 세계적인 뇌신경 질환 권위자인 마이클 림 스탠퍼드대학교 의과대학 교수가 참여해 눈길을 끌었다. 

마이클 림 교수는 파주시와의 협력을 공식화하는 협력의향서(LOI)를 전달하며, 향후 기술 협력과 공동 연구 확대에 대한 의지를 밝혔다. 

파주시는 이미 미국 MIT와 하버드대학교가 공동 설립한 세계적 유전체 연구기관인 브로드 연구소와 협력 관계를 구축한 바 있어, 이번 협약을 계기로 글로벌 바이오 연구 네트워크가 한층 강화될 전망이다.

산업 생태계 구축을 위한 기업 협력도 구체화됐다. 

파주시는 행사 당일 글로벌 생명과학 장비 기업인 에질런트 테크놀로지스를 비롯해 바이오 분석 기술 기업 신셀, AI 기반 신약 개발 기업 온코크로스와 잇따라 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했다. 

이를 통해 연구, 분석, 신약 개발로 이어지는 전주기적 바이오 산업 생태계를 조성하겠다는 구상이다.

컨퍼런스 2부에서는 바이오 산업의 미래 핵심으로 꼽히는 ‘AI 융합’을 주제로 한 논의가 이어졌다. 

마이클 림 교수와 함께 김재경 한국과학기술연구원(KIST) 교수, 이상민 포항공과대학교(POSTECH) 교수가 기조강연에 나서 바이오와 인공지능의 결합이 가져올 산업 구조 변화와 기술 혁신 방향을 제시했다. 

이어진 전문가 토론에서는 산·학·연 관계자들이 참여해 국제 협력 전략과 한국형 바이오 클러스터 구축 방안에 대한 심도 있는 의견을 나눴다.

파주시는 이번 컨퍼런스를 계기로 경제자유구역 지정 추진에 더욱 박차를 가한다는 방침이다. 

시 관계자는 “글로벌 연구기관과 기업, 석학들이 함께한 이번 행사는 파주가 국제적 바이오 산업 거점으로 도약하는 중요한 전환점”이라며 “지속적인 투자 유치와 전략적 협력을 통해 경쟁력 있는 바이오 클러스터를 완성해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

바이오와 AI의 융합을 기반으로 한 파주 경제자유구역 구상이 현실화될 경우, 경기 북부는 물론 국내 산업 전반에도 새로운 성장 축이 형성될 것으로 기대된다.

Paju City has set out to secure future growth engines by expanding its global cooperation network with the bio industry as its central axis.

On the 2nd, Paju City hosted the ‘2026 Paju Free Economic Zone Bio Conference’ at the Korea Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul. With the participation of world-renowned scholars, global companies, and domestic research institutions, the city officially declared its determination to leap forward as a hub for the bio industry. Sponsored by the Korea Pharmaceutical & Bio Association, the event focused on sharing the latest trends in the bio industry and strengthening the foundation for international cooperation. In the second part of the conference, discussions continued on the theme of "AI Convergence," considered a key element for the future of the bio-industry. Along with Professor Michael Lim, Professor Jae-Kyung Kim of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and Professor Sang-Min Lee of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) delivered keynote speeches, presenting directions for industrial structural changes and technological innovation brought about by the combination of biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

In the subsequent expert panel discussion, representatives from industry, academia, and research institutions engaged in in-depth discussions regarding international cooperation strategies and plans for establishing a Korean-style bio cluster.

Taking this conference as an opportunity, Paju City plans to further accelerate its push for the designation of a Free Economic Zone.

A city official stated, "This event, bringing together global research institutions, companies, and distinguished scholars, marks a crucial turning point for Paju to leap forward as an international hub for the bio industry," adding, "We will complete a competitive bio cluster through continuous investment attraction and strategic cooperation."

If the vision for the Paju Free Economic Zone, based on the convergence of biotechnology and AI, becomes a reality, it is expected to form a new growth axis not only for northern Gyeonggi Province but also for the entire domestic industry.
