경기북부보훈지청이 제107주년 3·1절을 맞아 독립유공자로 포상된 애국지사 4인의 유족에게 정부 포상을 전수했다.

이번 전수식은 지난 10일과 14일 이틀에 걸쳐 진행됐으며, 조국의 독립을 위해 헌신한 선열들의 공적을 기리고 그 후손들에게 국가 차원의 존경과 감사를 전하기 위해 마련됐다.

대통령표창이 추서된 독립유공자는 고(故) 김흥악·원성본·박경은·최화갑 지사로, 이들은 1919년 3월 31일 당시 경기도 양주군(현 남양주시) 진접면 부평리에서 전개된 독립만세운동에 참여해 일제의 압제에 맞서 싸웠다.

100여 년이라는 긴 시간이 흐른 뒤, 그동안 묻혀 있던 공적이 재조명되면서 이들의 숭고한 희생은 국가의 공식 포상을 통해 뒤늦게나마 인정받게 됐다.

특히 이번 전수식은 지청 내에서의 공식 행사뿐 아니라 고령이나 거동이 불편한 유족들을 위해 직접 자택과 보호센터를 방문하는 ‘찾아가는 보훈’ 방식으로 진행돼 의미를 더했다. 

이는 국가가 먼저 다가가 끝까지 책임을 다하겠다는 ‘적극적 보훈’의 의지를 반영한 조치다.

포상을 전달받은 한 유족은 “선조의 독립운동 사실을 뒤늦게 알게 돼 송구한 마음도 있지만, 이제라도 국가가 잊지 않고 찾아줘 감사하다”며 “조상의 헌신이 공식적으로 인정받은 오늘이 가족들에게 큰 자부심이 된다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

박용주 경기북부보훈지청장은 “긴 세월이 흐른 뒤 전달된 포상이 후손들에게 위로와 자긍심이 되기를 바란다”며 “선열들의 희생이 헛되지 않도록 마지막 한 분의 독립유공자를 발굴하는 그날까지 국가의 책임을 다하겠다”고 강조했다.

한편 국가보훈부는 매년 3·1절과 광복절, 순국선열의 날 등 정기 포상뿐 아니라 수시 발굴을 통해 독립유공자 포상을 이어가고 있으며, 앞으로도 발굴 사업을 지속 확대해 선열들의 독립 정신을 미래 세대에 계승해 나갈 방침이다.

The independence activists posthumously awarded the Presidential Commendation are the late Kim Heung-ak, Won Seong-bon, Park Gyeong-eun, and Choi Hwa-gap.
