고양특례시가 도심 속 아이들을 위한 친환경 녹색공간 조성에 나섰다.

고양특례시는 상탄초등학교를 대상으로 추진한 '2026년 학교숲 조성사업'을 성공적으로 마무리했다고 6일 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 지난 5월부터 약 두 달간 진행됐으며, 단순히 녹지를 확충하는 데 그치지 않고 교내 방치되거나 단조로웠던 자투리 공간을 학생들이 자연을 체험하고 휴식할 수 있는 생태학습 공간으로 새롭게 조성하는 데 중점을 뒀다.

새롭게 조성된 학교숲은 학생들이 매일 이용하는 등하굣길 진입 공간을 중심으로 다양한 수목과 초화류를 식재해 기존의 단조로운 보행환경을 개선했다. 

학생들은 등하굣길을 걸으며 계절에 따라 변화하는 자연을 오감으로 느끼고 생태를 체험할 수 있는 감성 정원을 만나게 됐다.

특히 관리가 어려워 활용도가 낮았던 교내 음지 공간에는 유지관리가 비교적 쉬운 '드라이가든'을 도입해 지속 가능한 녹지 공간으로 탈바꿈시켰다.

이를 통해 학교의 관리 부담은 줄이면서도 사계절 내내 생명력을 유지하는 친환경 공간을 조성해 학생과 교직원들로부터 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다.

고양특례시는 지난 2003년부터 학생들에게 친환경 학습환경과 쾌적한 휴식 공간을 제공하기 위해 학교숲 조성사업을 지속적으로 추진해 왔다. 

이번 상탄초등학교를 포함해 현재까지 지역 내 47개 학교에 학교별 특성을 반영한 맞춤형 학교숲을 조성했다.

고양시 관계자는 "새롭게 단장한 상탄초등학교의 등하굣길이 학생들의 창의력과 감수성을 키우는 살아있는 자연 교과서이자 편안한 휴식 공간이 되길 바란다"며 "앞으로도 학교는 물론 지역 주민들의 일상에도 생동감을 더하는 녹색 공간을 지속적으로 확대해 나가겠다"고 말했다.
