파주시가 임진강 수산자원 증식과 생태계 복원을 위해 뱀장어 치어 방류 사업을 추진했다.

파주시는 지난 12일 적성면 두지리 선착장을 비롯한 임진강 일원에서 지역 어촌계장과 어민, 관계 공무원 등이 참석한 가운데 뱀장어 치어 1만5,000마리를 방류했다고 밝혔다.

이번에 방류한 뱀장어는 파주시의 대표적인 특산 어종으로, 임진강 수산자원 회복과 어업 기반 강화에 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.

시는 최근 기후변화와 어획량 감소 등으로 어려움을 겪고 있는 지역 어민들의 소득 증대에도 도움이 될 것으로 보고 있다.

파주시는 임진강의 건강한 생태환경 조성과 지속 가능한 어업 기반 마련을 위해 매년 치어 방류 사업을 확대하고 있다. 

지난해에는 사업비 2억3,000만 원을 투입해 참게, 황복, 메기, 동자개, 대농갱이, 뱀장어 등 총 70만 마리의 치어를 방류했다.

올해는 총 2억 원의 사업비를 들여 방류 규모를 100만 마리까지 확대할 계획이다. 

이번 뱀장어 치어 방류를 시작으로 오는 7월에는 다슬기, 8월에는 동자개, 9월에는 대농갱이와 황복 등을 순차적으로 방류해 임진강 수산자원 회복에 힘을 보탤 예정이다.

파주시는 치어 방류 사업과 함께 임진강 변 환경정화 활동도 병행하며 내수면 생태계 보전과 어업환경 개선에 힘쓰고 있다. 

단순한 자원 증식을 넘어 지속 가능한 수산자원 관리 체계를 구축하겠다는 방침이다.
