고양특례시가 미래형 모빌리티 시대를 앞당길 자율주행버스 시범운행에 본격 나선다.

고양시는 15일부터 7월 14일까지 한 달간 시민들을 대상으로 자율주행버스 시범운행을 실시한다고 밝혔다. 

이번 시범운행은 시민들에게 첨단 교통서비스를 직접 체험할 기회를 제공하는 동시에 자율주행 기술의 안전성과 운영 적정성을 검증해 향후 대중교통 서비스 확대를 위한 기초자료를 확보하기 위해 마련됐다.

시는 그동안 국토교통부의 스마트시티 조성사업을 통해 자율주행 기반 교통 인프라를 구축해 왔으며, 이번 시험운행을 통해 실제 도로 환경에서 자율주행 기술의 편의성과 활용 가능성을 시민들이 직접 경험할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

시범운행에는 정원 19명의 자율주행버스 1대가 투입되며, 시민 누구나 무료로 이용할 수 있다. 운행 시간은 평일 오전 10시부터 오후 5시까지다.

운행 노선은 대화역을 출발해 킨텍스역과 종합운동장을 순환하는 구간으로 운영된다. 

주요 정류장은 대화역, 일산백병원입구, 현대백화점, 현대모터스튜디오 고양, 킨텍스역, 킨텍스, 한국건설기술연구원, 종합운동장 등이다.

고양시는 시범운행 기간 동안 안전을 최우선 가치로 두고 체계적인 관리 체계를 가동한다. 

매일 운행 전 차량 상태와 자율주행 센서 작동 여부를 점검하고, 운행 종료 후에는 주행 데이터를 분석해 위험 구간을 재학습시키는 등 시스템 고도화를 추진할 계획이다.

시는 이번 시범운행 과정에서 수집되는 주행 데이터와 시민 이용 수요를 면밀히 분석해 향후 자율주행 대중교통 정책 수립에 활용할 방침이다. 

분석 결과는 환승체계 구축과 유상운송 서비스 도입 검토 등 미래 교통체계 마련의 핵심 자료로 활용될 예정이다.

특히 시는 이번 시범운행 성과를 바탕으로 오는 7월 중순 이후 노선 확대를 추진할 계획이다. 

기존 주간 노선 확장과 함께 교통 취약 시간대인 심야 시간대에 대화역과 정발산역, 대곡역, 화정역을 연결하는 심야 노선을 신설해 시민 이동 편의를 높인다는 구상이다.

고양시 관계자는 “이번 시범운행은 시민들이 미래 모빌리티를 직접 체험하고 자율주행 기술의 안전성을 확인할 수 있는 의미 있는 기회”라며 “운행 결과를 면밀히 분석해 더욱 편리하고 안전한 자율주행 대중교통 서비스를 구축해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
