66년의 시간이 흘러, 거리에서 민주주의를 외치던 청년들의 이름이 다시 불렸다.

 4·19혁명의 정신을 몸소 실천했던 이들이 국가의 이름으로 예우를 받으며, 오랜 세월 뒤늦게나마 역사의 중심에 섰다.

경기북부보훈지청은 제66주년 4·19혁명 기념일을 맞아 민주주의 발전에 기여한 유공자와 유족들에게 정부 포상을 전수했다고 밝혔다. 

이번 전수는 4월 20일부터 28일까지 순차적으로 진행됐으며, 그동안 조명받지 못했던 숨은 공로자들을 발굴해 국가 차원의 예우를 다하기 위해 마련됐다.

포상의 주인공들은 1960년 당시 교복을 입은 고등학생이거나 강의실에 앉아 있던 대학생들이었다. 

그러나 그들은 불의에 침묵하지 않았다.

이미애 씨는 마산간호고등기술학교 재학 시절 3·15 의거에 참여한 뒤 이어진 가두 시위에서 선봉에 섰고, 이성춘 씨는 고려대학교 재학 중 시위용 머리띠를 나누며 동료들을 독려했다.

특히 발포를 막기 위해 계엄사령관을 직접 만나 설득에 나서는 등 사태의 비극을 줄이기 위해 끝까지 책임을 다했다.

서용남 씨는 대광고 3학년 신분으로 종로와 을지로 일대를 누비며 부정선거 규탄 시위를 이끌었고, 한정길 씨는 경무대 앞 시위 도중 경찰의 총격을 입고도 물러서지 않은 당시의 증인으로 남아 있다.

고(故) 이석우 씨는 연세대학교 문과대 총운영위원장으로 시위를 조직하고, 이후 부상 학생들을 위한 구호 활동에 헌신했다.

이날 전수식은 단순한 시상 이상의 의미를 지녔다. 

반세기가 넘는 세월이 흐른 뒤에도 국가가 그들의 이름을 기억하고 있다는 사실은 유공자와 유족들에게 깊은 울림으로 다가왔다. 

한 참석자는 “우리의 희생이 오늘의 대한민국 민주주의를 만든 뿌리가 되었다는 사실에 큰 자부심을 느낀다”고 말하며 눈시울을 붉혔다.

박용주 지청장은 “이렇게 오랜 시간이 지난 뒤에야 포상을 드리게 되어 송구하다”면서도 “민주주의의 기틀을 세운 분들의 숭고한 정신이 사회 전반에 계승될 수 있도록 보훈 행정의 역량을 집중하겠다”고 밝혔다.

국가보훈부는 앞으로도 아직 드러나지 않은 4·19혁명 유공자들을 지속적으로 발굴할 방침이다. 

역사의 그늘에 남아 있는 이름들을 끝까지 찾아내겠다는 의지다.
