6·25전쟁 당시 대한민국의 자유를 지키기 위해 헌신한 유엔군 참전용사들의 숭고한 희생을 기리는 뜻깊은 여정이 시작됐다. 

유엔한국참전국협회는 지난 24일 경기도 가평군에서 가평전투 75주년 추모행사를 거행하고, 부산 유엔기념공원까지 이어지는 ‘625km UN 도보장정’의 출발을 공식 선언했다.

이번 행사는 자유 수호를 위해 목숨을 바친 영연방 및 캐나다 참전용사들의 희생을 기리고, 그들의 정신을 오늘과 미래 세대에 계승하기 위해 마련됐다. 

이날 오전 10시, 가평군 영연방참전기념비에서 열린 ‘영연방 가평전투 75주년 추모식’은 주한영국대사관 주관으로 엄숙하게 진행됐다. 

행사에는 영국·호주·캐나다·뉴질랜드 등 영연방 4개국 참전용사와 유가족 30명을 비롯해 각국 대사 및 무관, 유엔군 부사령관, 정부 및 군 주요 인사들이 참석해 의미를 더했다.

추모식은 묵념과 헌화로 경건한 분위기 속에 이어졌으며, 특히 대한민국 공군 특수비행팀 블랙이글스의 추모 비행이 가평 상공을 수놓으며 참전용사들의 희생과 헌신에 깊은 경의를 표했다.

이어 오후 1시에는 가평 캐나다전투기념비에서 ‘가평지구전투 전승 기념 추모식’과 함께 ‘625km UN 도보장정’ 출정식이 열렸다.

주한 캐나다대사는 추모사를 통해 “캐나다는 가평을 결코 잊지 않을 것”이라며, 이번 도보장정에 참여하기 위해 캐나다에서 온 군사역사학자의 헌신에 감사를 전했다.

이번 도보장정은 참전용사의 희생을 기억하고 전후 세대 간 유대를 강화하기 위한 상징적 프로젝트로, 캐나다 군사역사학자를 비롯해 대학생 홍보대사 연합과 ROTC, 국내 주요 대학 학생 대표 등 약 80명이 함께한다. 

참가자들은 가평을 출발해 서울과 수원, 평택, 대전, 칠곡, 성주, 창녕, 마산합포구를 거쳐 부산 유엔기념공원까지 약 625km를 도보로 이동하며 약 30일간의 여정을 이어갈 예정이다.

이번 도보장정의 핵심 참여자는 전 구간을 직접 걸으며 75년 전 참전용사들의 발자취를 되새길 계획이다. 

그는 “모든 구간을 완주하며 그날의 희생을 기억하고 기리겠다”고 밝혔다.

유엔한국참전국협회 관계자는 “이번 도보장정은 단순한 걷기를 넘어 이름 없이 싸운 영웅들의 희생을 가슴에 새기는 역사적 여정”이라며 “국민들의 관심과 참여가 이어지길 기대한다”고 전했다.
