파주소방서는 26일 오전 7시경 파주시 적성면의 한 단독주택에서 발생한 화재가 인근 주민의 기지와 평소 안전의식 덕분에 큰 피해 없이 진화되는 일이 있었다고 밝혔다.

화재 현장에서 시민영웅으로 나선 이호연씨(60)는 이날 오전 어머니로부터 "밖에 불이 났다"는 말을 듣고 즉시 주택용 소화기를 들고 현장으로 달려갔다.

이씨는 화재 현장에 있던 거주자들을 먼저 안전한 곳으로 대피시킨 후, 직접 소화기를 사용해 불길을 잡아냈다.

"평소 방송을 통해 소화기 사용법을 익혀둔 덕분에 실제 상황에서도 당황하지 않고 진화에 나설 수 있었습니다." 이호연씨는 이번 일을 회상하며 평소 안전교육의 중요성을 강조했다.

이번 사건은 주택용 소방시설의 중요성을 다시 한 번 일깨워주는 사례로 주목받고 있다.

김명찬 파주소방서장은 "주택용 소방시설은 화재로부터 가족과 재산을 지킬 수 있는 최소한의 안전시설"이라며 "모든 가정에 소화기와 화재경보기를 비치해 만일의 상황에 대비해야 한다"고 강조했다.

특히 김 서장은 "이번 사례처럼 평소 소화기 사용법을 숙지해두면 초기 대응이 가능해 대형 화재를 예방할 수 있다"며 "파주소방서는 앞으로도 주택용 소방시설 설치와 관련한 홍보 활동을 지속해서 강화할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
