고양국제고등학교가 올해 5월 영국과 태국 학생들을 초청해 진행한 국제교류 프로그램이 큰 성과를 거두었다. 

이번 교류는 단순한 문화 체험을 넘어 6·25 전쟁 참전국 간의 역사적 의미를 되새기고 평화의 가치를 함께 모색하는 뜻깊은 시간이었다.

고양국제고는 지난 5월 8일부터 18일까지 영국 스트라우드 고등학교(Stroud High School)와 태국 마하사라캄대학교 부설학교(Mahasarakham University Demonstration School) 학생들을 초청했다. 

영국 학생 25명, 태국 학생 6명과 인솔교사 5명이 참가한 이번 프로그램에는 고양국제고 학생 31명이 홈스테이를 제공하며 함께했다.

특히 작년 한국-영국 양국 간 교류에서 한국-영국-태국 3개국으로 확대된 점이 주목된다. 

고양국제고는 2011년 개교 이후 미국, 일본, 대만, 튀르키예 등 전 세계 고등학교와의 국제교류를 통해 학생들의 글로벌 역량을 키워왔다.

교류 학생들은 고양국제고의 정규 수업에 직접 참여했다.

운동, 정치와 법, 미술창작, 심화영어, 일본어, 스페인어, 수학, 문학, 통합사회, 통합과학, 중국어 등 다양한 과목을 함께 수강하며 한국의 교육과정을 체험했다.

또한 인문학 프로젝트, 체육한마당, 동아리 활동, 국제교육 세션 등 특별활동에도 공동 참여해 문화 다양성에 대한 이해를 넓혔다.

허미영, 곽지현 교사가 담당하는 국제교육부는 더 많은 학생들이 국제교류를 경험할 수 있도록 교육과정 전반에 다양한 활동을 접목해 운영했다.

이번 교류의 핵심은 6·25 전쟁 참전국으로서의 역사적 의미를 되새기는 보훈교육이었다. 

참가자들은 전쟁기념관, 파주 설마리 전투 추모공원, 오두산 통일전망대를 방문해 참전 용사들의 희생을 기렸다.

특히 설마리 추모공원에서는 고양국제고 학생들이 직접 작성한 헌시 낭독과 연설, 꽃바구니 헌화를 통해 영국 글로스터셔 연대와의 역사적 연관성을 되새겼다. 

이를 통해 학생들은 참전국 미래세대로서의 자각과 평화에 대한 책임감을 다졌다.

외국 학생들은 홈스테이를 통해 한국 가정의 일상을 체험하며 진정성 있는 문화교류를 경험했다.

창덕궁 한복 체험과 인사동 문화의 거리 탐방을 통해 한국의 전통과 현대문화를 폭넓게 이해하는 시간도 가졌다.

출국 전에는 학생 주도로 송별회를 열어 각국 문화를 소개하는 공연과 'Farewell 가방' 제작 활동을 진행하며 우정을 나누는 따뜻한 마무리를 했다.

피영로 고양국제고 교장은 "영국·태국과의 교류를 통해 참전용사들의 고귀한 희생과 역사적 의미를 되새기며 문화 다양성을 이해하는 국제교류 프로그램을 지속 확대해 나갈 계획"이라며 "학생들이 글로벌 감각과 소통 능력을 키워 미래 사회를 선도할 글로벌 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다"고 말했다.

참가 학생들의 반응도 뜨거웠다. 영국 학생 에라지 모신(Eraj Mohsin)은 "교환 프로그램을 통해 양국 간 역사를 깊이 이해할 수 있었으며, 소중한 친구들을 많이 사귈 수 있어 값진 경험이었다"고 말했다.

고양국제고 이현지우 학생은 "다른 문화권 친구들과 함께 생활할 수 있어 뜻깊었다"며 "특히 파주 설마리 전투공원에서 세 국가 학생들이 한마음으로 6·25 전쟁 참전 용사를 기리는 활동이 기억에 남는다"고 소감을 전했다.

고양국제고는 국가보훈부 주관 글로벌 아카데미 사업에서 우수교로 선정된 바 있으며, 올해도 유엔 글로벌 아카데미 사업에 선정되어 이번 교류 프로그램을 성공적으로 운영할 수 있었다.

The international exchange program that Goyang International High School conducted in May of this year by inviting students from the UK and Thailand achieved great results.

This exchange was a meaningful time to reflect on the historical significance of the countries that participated in the Korean War and to seek the value of peace together, going beyond a simple cultural experience.

From May 8 to 18, Goyang International High School invited students from Stroud High School in the UK and Mahasarakham University Demonstration School in Thailand.

This program involved 25 students from the UK, 6 students from Thailand, and 5 accompanying teachers, with 31 students from Goyang International High School providing homestays.

In particular, the fact that the exchange between Korea and the UK last year expanded to Korea, the UK, and Thailand is noteworthy.

Since its opening in 2011, Goyang International High School has fostered students’ global capabilities through international exchanges with high schools around the world, including the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and Turkey.

Exchange students directly participated in regular classes at Goyang International High School.

Principal Pi Yeong-ro of Goyang International High School said, “We plan to continue to expand international exchange programs that allow students to reflect on the noble sacrifices and historical significance of veterans through exchanges with the UK and Thailand and understand cultural diversity,” and added, “We will actively support students so that they can develop global awareness and communication skills and grow into global talents who will lead future society.”

The response from participating students was also enthusiastic. Eraj Mohsin, a British student, said, “Through the exchange program, I was able to deeply understand the history of the two countries and made many precious friends, which was a valuable experience.”
