고양문화재단은 판소리 뮤지컬 <적벽>을 4월 26일과 27일에 고양어울림누리 어울림극장에서 선보인다. 

<적벽>은2017년 초연 이후 정동극장에서 ‘적벽 마니아’를 양산하며 매번 호평과 함께 매진행렬을 이어가던 작품이다. 

국립 전문 공연단체의 우수 프로그램을 고양에서 선보이며 전통예술을 현대적인 감각으로 재해석한 선도적인 공연 기획을 보여준다.

뮤지컬 '적벽'은 삼국지에 나오는 가장 유명한 전투인 '적벽대전(赤壁大戰)'을 소재로, 3세기 한나라 말엽 위‧한·오나라가 부패와 혼란의 정세 속 치열한 세력 다툼을 벌이는 이야기를 담았다. 

1368년경 발간된 나관중의 소설 『삼국지연의』 , 500여년 후 이를 바탕으로 조선에서 불렸던 판소리 ‘적벽가’를 재구성한 작품이다. 

삼국지는 영웅들의 이야기를 담았다면, 판소리 ‘적벽가’는 권력의 희생양이 되는 민중의 시각에서 지배층(‘조조’)에 대한 비판과 풍자를 담았다. 

기존 서양 리듬에 맞춘 뮤지컬과 달리 우리의 장단과 소리로 서사를 풀어내는 ‘적벽’은 합창과 군무를 통해 민중의 목소리를 전하며 세상의 정의와 삶의 방식을 논한다.

세련된 판소리 편곡과 감각적인 현대무용으로 전통과 현대, 그 경계를 가볍게 뛰어넘으며 새로운 장르를 개척했다는 평가를 받는다. 

명실상부 국립정동극장 대표 레퍼토리로 자리잡은 ‘적벽’이 여섯 번째 무대로 전통 콘텐츠의 가능성과 가치를 증명해 간다.

'적벽'은 박진감 넘치는 안무와 강렬한 에너지의 판소리 합창이 특징이다. 

특히 이번 시즌 공연에서는 의상과 음악이 한층 보강됐다. 먼저 의상은 현대적 미감을 보여온 기본 의상에 갑옷의 형상화와 부분적 해체를 통한 디자인 요소를 추가했다. 

음악은 장면의 성격을 명확화하는데 집중했으며, 일부 이질적인 넘버들을 다듬었다.

‘적벽’의 관전포인트 중 하나인 ‘부채’는 관우의 청룡언월도 등 각종 무기이자 유일한 소품으로 감정을 대변한다. 

특히 화공(火攻)을 위한 ‘동남풍’을 더욱 더 강렬히 보여주며 볼거리를 풍성하게 한다.

배우의 성별과 관계없이 배역을 정하는 '젠더프리(Gender-free) 캐스트'도 공연의 또 하나의 매력이다.
