고양특례시는 지난 14일 인천본부세관에서 압수한 곡물류(녹두 등) 약 1톤을 장항습지에 서식하는 철새 등 야생동물들의 먹이로 살포했다고 밝혔다.

고양시 장항습지 철새 드론 급식 봉사대는 인천본부세관에서 지역 환경 단체들에 제공한 곡물류 중 약 1톤을 수령해 드론으로 장항습지에 살포했다.

압수된 곡물은 식품으로 가치는 없으나 식물검역에 합격해 국내에 병해충을 옮길 염려가 없는 것으로 보관 상태나 품질이 양호한 제품이다.

이를 폐기할 경우 환경오염과 함께 탄소 배출을 유발하고 그에 따른 비용까지 발생시키는데 먹이로 활용하게 되면 야생동물도 보호할 수 있고 양질의 먹이를 구입하는 비용도 줄일 수 있다.

장항습지는 국내에서 24번째로 등록된 람사르 습지로 멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅱ급인 재두루미나 큰기러기 등을 포함한 3만 마리 이상의 철새가 도래하는 생태계가 매우 우수한 곳이다.

시는 습지의 생물다양성을 확보하기 위해 올해도 습지보호지역의 농민들과 생태계서비스지불제 계약을 체결해 볏짚을 존치하거나 벼를 수매해 먹이로 제공하는 등 철새들의 서식을 돕기 위해 노력하고 있다. 

특히, 작년 시범운영을 거치고 본격적으로 드론을 활용하기 위해 ‘장항습지 철새 드론 급식 봉사대’를 결성해 매주 2회 한번에 500~1,000kg의 볍씨 등을 친환경적이며 안정적으로 공급하고 있다.
