고양특례시 일산동구보건소는‘사전 연명의료 결정제도’를 연중 실시해 품위 있고 존엄하게 생을 마감하는 웰다잉(Well-Dying) 문화 조성에 앞장서고 있다.

연명의료 결정제도란 임종 과정의 기간만을 연장하는 연명의료(심폐소생술, 인공호흡기, 혈액투석, 항암제 투여 등)를 시행하지 않거나 중단할 수 있도록 함으로써 삶을 존엄하게 마무리할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 마련된 제도이다. 

19세 이상 성인이라면 누구나 연명의료에 관한 본인의 의사를 사전연명의료의향서를 통해 남겨놓을 수 있다.

보건복지부 지정 사전연명의료의향서 등록기관인 일산동구보건소는 2018년 7월 2일 등록기관으로 지정된 이후 지난해 말까지 9,003명의 등록을 지원했다.

일산동구보건소 관계자는“생애 말기에 인간 존엄성과 자기결정을 존중하는 문화 확산을 위해 거점기관으로서 역할에 충실하고, 연명의료 결정제도 발전에 기여하도록 노력을 기울이겠다”고 밝혔다.[고양=박정호 기자]
