파주시는 비무장지대(DMZ)를 탐방하는 ‘파주 디엠지(DMZ) 평화관광’의 누적 관광객이 1천만 명을 돌파했다고 밝혔다.

지난 11월 8일, 인천에 거주하는 박소영 씨와 네덜란드인 옌스 올센(Jens Olsen) 씨가 1천만 번째 관광객의 행운을 차지했다.

시는 이를 기념해 두 사람에게 축하 꽃다발과 디엠지(DMZ) 철조망을 비롯한 디엠지(DMZ) 관광기념품을 선물했다. 

한국인 박소영 씨는 소감을 묻는 질문에 ‘고향이 북한인 조부모의 영향으로 평소 민북지역에 대한 관심이 많았다. 

외국인 옌스 올센씨에게 세계 유일한 분단국가를 구경시켜 주고자 방문했는데 뜻밖의 선물을 받아 매우 기쁘다’는 소감을 밝혔다. 

한편 디엠지(DMZ) 평화관광은 1사단, 재향군인회, 파주시가 공동운영 협약을 맺고 2002년 5월 30일부터 운영을 시작했다. 

누적 관광객 1천만 명을 달성한 것은 첫 운영일로부터 약 22년 만이다. 이는 매년 평균 약 45만 명 이상이 방문한 셈이다. 

주목할 만한 것은 1천만 명 중 외국인이 508만 명에 달해 절반 이상을 차지했다는 점이다. 

또한, 지난해 경기도 내 주요 관광 지점 외국인 방문객 중 에버랜드에 이어 디엠지(DMZ) 평화관광이 2등을 차지해, 현재까지도 명실상부 세계인의 관광지로 위상을 떨치고 있다.

파주시는 올해 시비 2억 3천만 원을 들여 ‘디엠지(DMZ) 평화관광’에 온라인 예약제를 전격 도입했다. 

도라산 셔틀열차 연계프로그램도 재개하는 등 편의성과 다양성을 개선하기 위해 관광 사업을 적극 추진해왔다. 

그 결과 어려운 안보 상황에서도 2024년 방문객이 지난해 같은 시기 보다 약 10%가량 늘었다. 올해는 40만 명을 돌파할 것으로 추산하고 있다.

한편, 파주시는 11월 26일 누적 관광객 1천만 명 돌파를 기념해 1사단, 파주도시관광공사 등 관계 기관들과 함께 임진각 한반도 생태평화 종합관광센터에서 디엠지(DMZ) 평화관광의 성장 과정을 공유하고 축하하는 자리를 가질 계획이라고 밝혔다.[파주=박정호 기자]
