고양시재향군인회는 24일 고양특례시 덕양구 관산동 소재 필리핀군 참전기념비에서 회원 및 고양시청 공무원, 1338부대원 등 약 50명이 참석한 가운데 6·25전쟁에서 산화한 필리핀 참전군인들의 넋을 기리고 주변을 청소하는 환경정비활동을 펼쳤다고 밝혔다.

필리핀은 6·25전쟁 당시 미국, 영국에 이어 세 번째로 지상군을 파병했으며 연인원 7천420명이 참전해 전사자 448명(사망92명,부상,299명,실종57명)이 발생했다.

국방부는 이들의 숭고한 희생을 기리기 위해 지난 1974년 고양시에 높이 17m의 필리핀군   참전기념비를 세웠다.

한편 이날 행사에는 기념비 주변에 위치한 1338부대 장병들도 동참했다.

이 자리에서 윤인수 본부중대장은 “기념비가 부대에서 가까워 매달 환경정비와 관리를 하고 있다”며 “정전협정일을 앞두고 지자체, 재향군인회와 합동으로 이런 뜻깊은 행사를 갖게 돼 큰 보람을 느낀다”고 말했다.
