이동환 고양특례시장은 25일(현지시간) 주애틀란타 총영사관에 방문해 서상표 총영사와 면담을 갖고, 고양시와 애틀란타 간 교류와 협력을 진전시키기 위한 방안을 모색했다. 

이동환 시장은 고양시를 인구 108만의 혁신 도시이자 녹지와 환경 등 훌륭한 정주 여건을 가진 명품도시로 소개했다.

경제자유구역 지정을 통한 글로벌 기업, 국제학교 유치 노력 등을 설명하고, 일산테크노밸리 도시개발사업과 거점형 스마트시티 조성 등 주력 사업에 대해서도 안내했다. 

더불어 조지아 주립대학을 비롯해 코카콜라와 델타항공 등 포춘지 500대 기업 중 18개 본사가 위치한 풀턴 카운티 내 교육기관, 글로벌 기업들과 교류하고 협력할 수 있도록 지원과 협조를 당부했다. 

이동환 시장은 “고양시가 글로벌 자족도시로 발전하기 위해서는 다양한 첨단 기업과 교육기관이 위치해 있는 애틀란타와 같은 도시와의 협력이 중요하다”며 “특히 이번 방문은 풀턴 카운티 롭 피츠 의장님과 접견을 통해 양 도시 간 다방면에 걸친 상생발전 협력을 공고히 했고, 현지 기업 유치를 위한 기반 마련과 애틀란타 내 한인사회와 네트워크를 강화할 수 있는 좋은 기회였다”고 말했다. 

서상표 총영사는 “고양시는 수도 서울과 접근성이 좋고 훌륭한 인프라를 가진 도시인만큼 앞으로 국제 교류에 적극 협력하겠다”며 “또한 고양시가 첨단산업 분야에서 대한민국을 대표할 수 있는 미래도시로 발전해 나가기를 기대한다”고 전했다. 

이에 이 시장은 “향후 경제자유구역 지정을 통한 글로벌 자족도시로 도약은 물론 세계적인 스마트시티로서 대한민국 신성장 동력을 고양시에서 구축할 수 있도록 최선을 다할 계획”이라고 화답했다. [고양=박정호 기자]
