이동환 고양특례시장은 15일 중국 이우에서 개최 중인 세계지방정부연합(UCLG) 아태지부(ASPAC) 총회에 참석하여 2025년 예정인 차기 아태지부 총회 고양시 유치를 공식 제안하여 참여한 회원 도시들의 만장일치로 유치를 확정하였다.

이동환 시장은“현재 국제사회가 직면한 전쟁, 식량위기, 기후변화 등 글로벌 위기극복을 위해 세계지방정부연합을 중심으로 지방정부의 연대가 중요한 시점이며 고양시에서 차기 2025 세계지방정부연합 아태지부 총회를 개최하여 글로벌 공동 위기대응과 지방정부연대에 기여하고 싶다”고 제안했다.

이 시장은 “고양시는 훌륭한 지리적 접근성, 풍부한 문화유산 그리고 세계적 수준의 인프라를 갖추고 있어 2025년 차기 세계지방정부연합 아태총회를 개최하는데 최적의 장소”라고 설명했다.  

특히 총회 개최 장소로 한국 최대 규모의 첨단 전시컨벤션센터 킨텍스(KINTEX)가 있고 수도 서울에서 20분 거리의 인접성, 인천공항에서 40분 거리로 교통의 편리성을 강조했다.  

또한 풍부한 인프라와 인적자원, 유리한 지리적 조건을 바탕으로 글로벌 자족도시로의 도약을 위한 고양 경제자유구역 지정 추진에 대해 설명했다. 

스마트 모빌리티, 바이오, 컬처, 마이스, 반도체 분야 등 미래혁신 기술을 집약시킨 글로벌 K-혁신 클러스터 조성과 첨단기업 유치계획에 대해서도 소개했다.

특히 차기 총회 유치를 희망한 또 다른 도시인 중국 쿤밍시는 이동환 시장의 공식 제안발표 후 고양시의 우호교류 도시로서 2025년 차기 총회유치를 지지하며 고양시의 성공적인 개최를 위하여 적극 협력하겠다고 의사를 밝혔다. 

고양시와 쿤밍시는 2001년부터 경제, 문화, 화훼사업분야에서 상호협력하며 우호교류관계를 이어오고 있다.

한편 이동환 시장은 총회 이후 세계지방정부연합 아태지부 공동회장인 샘 브로우턴(Sam Broughton) 뉴질랜드 셀윈 시장과 양도시 교류방안 논의를 위한 간담회 시간을 가졌다.
