고양시는 5일 서울시 마포구 상암동 중소기업DMC타워에서 대한민국환경대상위원회가 주최하고, 농림축산식품부 등이 후원하는  ‘제18회 2023대한민국환경대상’ 시상식에서 환경행정 부문 생태도시 본상을 수상했다고 밝혔다.

대한민국환경대상은 의식주를 비롯한 생활환경에서부터 제품의 생산, 유통 소비와 서비스에 이르기까지의 전 과정에서 친환경적인 접근으로 노력한 단체 및 개인에게 수여된다.

대한민국환경대상 수상자는 지난 4월부터 서류심사, 구두발표 및 현장심사 등을 거쳐 선발됐다. 시상식은 국회 및 정부포상(특별부문), 본상 순으로 진행되었다. 

대한민국환경대상 본상은 6개 부문(국제협력, NGO, 개인, 산업, 공공, 지자체)으로 총 24개 단체가 선정됐다.

지자체 중에서는 고양시(생태도시)를 포함해 청도군(자원순환), 광명시(시민교육), 용인시(친환경인프라) 등 총 4개 지자체가 선정되었다.

고양시는 장항습지 람사르 등록, 자전거도로 425km 개설, 하천 백리길 및 몽골 고양의 숲 조성, 에너지자립률 12% 달성, 시민 기후행동 인센티브제 ‘고양탄소지움카드’출시 등 고양시가 저탄소 생태도시로서 우수성을 인정받아 본상에 선정됐다.

이동환 고양시장은 “도시 안에서 다양한 동식물이 공존하고 자연생태계가 유지되어야만 인간도 도시 안에서 함께 살아갈 수 있다는 점을 인지해야 한다”며, “지속가능한 생태도시로 거듭나기 위해 고양시가 많은 노력을 쏟아왔는데 이번 대한민국환경대상 본상 수상을 통해 고양시의 노력이 인정받은 것 같아 기쁘다”고 밝혔다. 

한편 고양시는 지난해 탄소중립 경연대회 지자체부문 최우수상을 수상한 것에 이어 대한민국환경대상 본상을 수상했다. 시는 환경과 기후의 중요성을 지속적으로 시민들에게 일깨워 시민의 기후행동 동참을 적극 유도할 계획이다. [고양=박정호 기자]
