이동환 고양시장은  지난 25일 스마트시티 사업 벤치마킹을 위해 시를 방문한 아자르 아르샤드 세베랑 페라이 시장과 함께 시에서 추진하고 있는 스마트도시 사업 내용을 공유하고, 도시 발전 방향에 대한 논의를 나눴다.

세베랑 페라이 시는 인구 94만의 말레이시아의 대도시로, 기존 농업 생산 위주의 산업이 발달했으나 최근 급속한 산업화와 함께 말레이시아의 주요 거점 산업지역으로 떠오르고 있다.

이동환 시장은 “고양시 또한 30년 전 인구 20만의 농촌 도시에서 현재는 108만의 대한민국 10대 도시로 진화했다”며, “두 도시 모두 기업 유치라는 공통된 명제를 지닌 만큼, 서로 정보를 공유하고 발전적인 의견을 나누고 싶다”고 말했다.

이동환 시장과 아자르 아르샤드 시장은  이번 만남을 계기로 양 도시의 지역 산업 발전뿐만 아니라 문화예술 분야 등 다양한 분야에서 상호 협력관계를 이어갈 것을 약속했으며, 경제자유구역, 드론 산업, 스마트시티 등 고양시의 주력 사업에 대해 소개하는 시간도 가졌다.
