고양시는 2023년 개최예정인 제28차 유엔기후변화협약 당사국총회(COP28) 유치를 위해, 한국호텔업협회와 비대면으로 업무협약을 2일 체결했다고 밝혔다.

유엔기후변화협약 당사국총회(COP28)는 2만명에서 최대 4만명이 참여하는 전세계 최대의 기후정상회의다.

2023년에는 아시아·태평양 지역에서 개최 예정이다.

기후정상회의인 만큼 개최지는 회의 개최로 증가한 온실가스 배출량을 상쇄하는 탄소중립 대책 마련, 수송과 이동에 드는 온실가스 감축, 온실가스 배출량이 적은 14,000여실 이상의 숙박 시설 구비 등의 조건을 만족해야 한다.

고양시는 우리나라 최대 컨벤션센터인 킨텍스가 위치해있으며 인천·김포공항 등과 연결성이 우수하나, 상대적으로 숙박시설이 부족해 한국호텔업협회와 협약을 체결했다.

한국호텔업협회 유용종 회장은 “고양시의 유엔기후변화협약 당사국총회(COP28) 유치를 적극 지지한다”며, “코로나로 인해 침체된 숙박업계가 행사유치로 다시 부활하고, 고양시가 전 세계적인 기후위기에 탄소중립 당사국총회를 개최할 수 있도록, 나아가 고양시가 국제적인 탄소중립 MICE 도시로 나아갈 수 있도록 호텔업협회가 적극 협조하겠다”고 밝혔다.

이재준 고양시장은 “COP28 유치는 단순히 사회경제적 이득 외에도 기후정상회의 개최를 통해서 얻는 인식·인프라 전환이 더 중요하다”며 “전 지구적 기후위기에 앞장서 대응하고 신기후체제에 적합한 도시로 변모하고자 노력하는 고양시의 앞으로 행보를 지켜봐달라”고 말했다.

한편 시는 지난 해 COP28 유치를 선언한 이후, 전국 최초로 ‘고양시 기후위기 비상선언’, ‘고양시 2050 탄소중립 선언’ 등 다양한 기후행동을  추진하고 있다.

또한 시는 지난 5월 장항습지를 국내 24번째 람사르 습지에 등록했다.
