Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital's Otorhinolaryngology Professor Jin-Yeop Kim co-authored a paper published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (IF 10.228) in March and was selected as'People Who Shines Korea' introduced by BRIC (Biology Research Information Center). .

The paper selected this time is on'Type 2 bone morphogenetic protein as a new biomarker for refractory nasal polyps'. This study was participated by Professor Daewoo Kim of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Boramae Hospital of Seoul National University, Professor Hyunwoo Shin of the Department of Pharmacology at Seoul National University, and Researcher Sooha Lim.

Chronic sinusitis (sinusitis) is a chronic disease and is one of the common diseases that occur in the nose in approximately 7-12% of the population. This sinusitis is a disease caused by an immunopathological problem accompanied by inflammation of the nasal cavity and sinus mucosa. Recently, it has been reported that inflammation (osteitis) in the bones under the mucous membrane is related to intractable chronic sinusitis, which is difficult to improve even with surgery.

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) is a member of the TGF-β superfamily and is known to regulate bone remodeling by stimulating osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

In this study, it was found that BMP-2 correlates with osteoitis in chronic sinusitis patients with nasal polyps, and induces epithelial to mesenchymal transition in the Th2 environment, contributing to the pathologic findings of the mucous membrane.

Professor Kim Jin-yeop said, “This study shows the role of BMP-2 in refractory chronic sinusitis. Although further research is needed on the role of BMP-2 in sinusitis, it is a good biomarker that can predict the prognosis of chronic sinusitis surgery. I think it could be.” Goyang = Reporter Lee Dong-seok
