Reflecting on a Decade of Goyang MICE: “A City Growing Together with Citizens Beyond Just Hosting Events”

- 1st Goyang MICE Vision Forum Held: Presenting a future vision spanning industry, culture, and tourism, aligned with the construction of KINTEX Exhibition Center 3.

- “Visitor Stays and Spending Drive Local Economic Growth”: Exploring mutually beneficial MICE strategies.

Goyang Special City hosted an event to reflect on the past decade of its MICE industry and explore directions for future development.

The city announced that the “1st Goyang MICE Vision Forum” took place on the 1st at G-ROUND 877 within the Goyang Smart City Center.

Approximately 100 participants—including representatives from the MICE industry and academia, officials from related organizations, citizens, and public servants—attended the event to discuss how to propel the Goyang MICE industry to the next level.

The forum was organized to address environmental changes surrounding the MICE industry—such as the construction of KINTEX Exhibition Center 3—and to identify actionable tasks for transforming Goyang into a global MICE hub.

The event held special significance as it marked the 10th anniversary of the Goyang Convention Bureau and the first anniversary of the Goyang International Exhibition Foundation, providing an opportunity to review past achievements and discuss future development strategies.

The event began with an awards ceremony honoring individuals who contributed to the development of Goyang’s MICE industry, followed by a keynote speech from Professor Kim Kyung-il of Ajou University.

Professor Kim highlighted the value created through human interaction from a psychological perspective and explained the process by which the MICE industry translates into urban competitiveness.

This was followed by a special discussion session themed “Connected City, Communicating Future: A New Path Opened by Goyang MICE.” Goyang Special City Mayor Min Gyeong-seon, along with Professors Kim Gyeong-il and Kim Cheol-won, participated as panelists to discuss the growth of the MICE industry, urban development, and the improvement of citizens' quality of life.

Key agenda items included not only the positive economic impact of large-scale exhibitions and cultural performances but also inconveniences faced by residents—such as traffic congestion, noise, and parking shortages—that can arise during these events.

Participants emphasized the need for active communication with citizens from the planning stage of MICE events. They stressed the importance of minimizing inconvenience while establishing a virtuous cycle where visitor spending translates into benefits for local commercial districts, businesses, and job creation.

The consensus was that the city needs a "mutually beneficial MICE model" that goes beyond simply increasing visitor numbers; it should aim to extend visitors' length of stay and link events with local tourism and commercial districts.

During the policy session, participants reviewed the achievements of Goyang’s MICE industry over the past decade and examined the future role and development direction of the Goyang International Exhibition Foundation.

In the general discussion moderated by Professor Yoon Yu-sik of Kyung Hee University, experts from various fields discussed ways to strengthen the Foundation's public role, attract more international conferences and specialized exhibitions, and enhance the global competitiveness of Goyang’s MICE industry.

Goyang Special City Mayor Min Gyeong-seon stated, "The success of the MICE industry should not be measured merely by the number of events held or the number of visitors." He added, "It must be evaluated based on how much inconvenience to citizens was reduced and what benefits were brought to the local community."

He further pledged, "We will focus our administrative capabilities on ensuring that the energy of connection generated at KINTEX translates into vitality and tangible growth throughout the city, all while maintaining constant communication with citizens, businesses, and experts." Based on the ideas presented at this forum, Goyang City plans to expand its efforts to attract international conferences and specialized exhibitions, strengthen programs linking local businesses with events, and develop tourism and cultural content designed to extend visitors' length of stay.

A Goyang City official stated, "We will continuously identify concrete action plans to ensure that the growth of the MICE industry extends beyond the event venues and positively impacts the local economy and the daily lives of citizens."

Goyang Special City intends to focus its administrative efforts on boosting economic and cultural benefits that citizens and the local community can tangibly experience, alongside expanding the scope of the MICE industry—such as through the construction of KINTEX Exhibition Center 3.
