Paju City and Korea University Partner for Lifelong Education: ‘Ilsaeng-ildae Project’ Set for New Leap in 2027

- Korea University’s Institute of Future Education to join the ‘Ilsaeng-ildae Project’ starting next year

- Connecting university educational resources with the local community: “High-quality learning close to home for all citizens”

Paju City has partnered with Korea University to expand lifelong learning opportunities for citizens and strengthen educational cooperation between the university and the local community.

On October 1, Paju City signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea University’s Institute of Future Education to promote lifelong education and significantly bolster the collaborative framework for the ‘Ilsaeng-ildae Project,’ a flagship university-linked lifelong learning initiative.

Officials from both institutions—including Paju Mayor Son Bae-chan and Moon Jung-bin, Director of Korea University’s Institute of Future Education—attended the signing ceremony. They pledged to provide citizens with broader lifelong learning opportunities and to establish a sustainable educational partnership that fosters mutual growth between the university and the local community.

The core of this agreement is Korea University’s participation in the ‘Ilsaeng-ildae Project.’

Starting in 2027, Korea University will join the project as a new partner. Leveraging its excellent faculty and educational infrastructure, the university plans to collaborate with Paju City to develop and operate specialized lifelong education programs tailored to the needs of local citizens.

The ‘Ilsaeng-ildae Project’ is an initiative in which Paju City pairs local universities with lifelong learning centers in various townships and neighborhoods (eup, myeon, and dong). This allows citizens to access university-level specialized lifelong education within their own local communities.

This project distinguishes itself from existing lifelong learning programs by directly connecting the educational resources and expertise possessed by universities to local residents. University faculty members are directly conducting educational sessions across diverse fields—ranging from the humanities and liberal arts to artificial intelligence (AI) and economics—thereby expanding learning options for citizens.

The scale of the initiative is also growing rapidly.

Launched in five local districts (eup, myeon, and dong) in 2025, the program has expanded to operate across eight districts and eight universities as of 2026.

Resident interest is high, with some programs filling up quickly during the enrollment phase.

With Korea University now participating, Paju City plans to bring specialized university educational content closer to citizens' daily lives and continuously expand customized lifelong learning programs that reflect local characteristics and resident needs.

Paju Mayor Son Bae-chan stated, "This landmark project is an innovative lifelong learning model that connects excellent university educational resources to the community, effectively turning our entire neighborhood into a campus." He added, "Building on this agreement, we will actively expand cooperation with universities to ensure citizens can enjoy diverse, high-quality learning opportunities close to home."

Moving forward, Paju City plans to broaden its cooperative ties with local universities to create a lifelong learning environment where anyone can access education tailored to their life stage and interests, thereby accelerating the realization of an "education city where learning is a part of daily life."
