Paju’s Gongneungcheon Stream Eco-Trail Project Selected as National Initiative; 5.46 Billion Won to Be Invested

- Selected as a final site for the 2027 national eco-trail development project; secured 50% of funding from the central government.

- Plans include constructing trails, observation decks, and ecological observation facilities along the 6.5km stretch between Songchon Bridge and Yeongcheon Bridge.

- Aims to minimize environmental damage through public-private-military governance and create a space for ecological education, tourism, and relaxation.

The "Gongneungcheon Stream Eco-Trail Development Project," currently being pursued by Paju City, has been selected as a final site for the "National Eco-Trail Development Project," a state-subsidized initiative under the Ministry of Environment for 2027.

With this selection, Paju City has secured a total project budget of 5.46 billion won.

The project costs will be shared equally (50% each) between the central government and the city; the inclusion of the relevant budget in the government's 2027 budget proposal is expected to accelerate the project's progress.

Paju City stated that this selection recognizes the government's acknowledgment of Gongneungcheon Stream’s value in biodiversity conservation, its potential as an ecological space, and the necessity of the eco-trail project.

To ensure the project proceeds smoothly, the city has maintained continuous consultations with relevant agencies, including Gyeonggi Province, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

In particular, the city actively prepared for the selection process by conducting feasibility studies and preliminary designs.

With the secured central government funding, Paju City plans to rapidly proceed with the subsequent steps required to implement the project. The plan is to proceed without delay with detailed design, necessary permitting, and consultations with relevant agencies, while enhancing the project's quality by carefully incorporating site conditions and ecological factors.

In particular, the project will focus on creating an eco-friendly trail area that citizens can use safely and conveniently, while maximizing the preservation of the natural environment along Gongneungcheon Stream.

Jo Yun-ok, Head of the Climate Crisis Response Division at Paju City, stated, "We will actively utilize a governance framework involving the public, government, and military to minimize environmental damage during construction, and we will create a trail that anyone can use safely through an eco-friendly design that reflects actual site conditions."

She added, "We will do our utmost to establish Gongneungcheon Stream as a premier destination where ecological education, tourism, and relaxation come together."

Meanwhile, the Gongneungcheon Stream eco-trail project covers a total distance of 6.5 km, stretching from Songchon Bridge at the estuary to Yeongcheon Bridge.

This section will feature various facilities for ecological observation and relaxation, including the eco-trail itself, an observation deck, observation platforms, viewing telescopes, and rest areas designed for harmonious coexistence with nature.

Through this project, Paju City aims to preserve the stream's rich ecological resources while establishing an eco-tourism infrastructure that allows citizens to experience and enjoy nature up close.
