S-OIL Donates 100 Million Won to Janghang Wetland in Goyang… Continuing a Five-Year Partnership for Ecological Conservation

Collaborating with the Han River Basin Environmental Office and Eco Korea to support the conservation of endangered species, secure food sources for migratory birds, and manage ecosystem-disrupting species.

S-OIL has donated 100 million won to support the conservation of the ecosystem at Goyang’s Janghang Wetland—a designated Ramsar site—thereby reinforcing a partnership that has spanned five years.

Goyang Special City announced that it held a ceremony on September 30 at the Mayor’s Open Office to mark S-OIL’s donation for the conservation of the Ramsar-designated Janghang Wetland ecosystem.

Attendees at the event included Goyang Special City Mayor Min Gyeong-seon, S-OIL President Ryu Yeol, Han River Basin Environmental Office Head Lee Seung-hwan, and Eco Korea Chairman Yoo Young-han.

During the event, S-OIL presented the 100 million won donation dedicated to preserving the Janghang Wetland ecosystem.

This donation marks the fifth year of collaboration among Goyang City, S-OIL, the Han River Basin Environmental Office, and Eco Korea to protect the Janghang Wetland.

The funds will be used for various projects aimed at enhancing biodiversity and restoring the health of the wetland ecosystem.

Specifically, the donation will support habitat improvements for endangered species and the creation of wintering grounds, as well as the securing of food sources to ensure stable habitats for migratory birds during the winter.

Additionally, the funds will be utilized to remove ecosystem-disrupting species—such as the bur cucumber (*Sicyos angulatus*), which negatively impacts the ecosystem—and to research eco-friendly management strategies. Janghang Wetland is a prominent natural wetland located at the Han River estuary; it is an area of high ecological value that serves as a habitat for diverse wildlife and migratory birds.

To preserve the ecological value of Janghang Wetland and raise public awareness about the importance of the natural environment, Goyang City has been conducting ecological conservation projects based on cooperation among the public sector, private sector, and corporations.

Goyang Mayor Min Kyung-sun stated, "Since there are limits to what the administration can achieve alone in preserving the Ramsar-designated Janghang Wetland, it is crucial for corporations, the private sector, and the government to join forces." He added, "We will build a sustainable ESG eco-city that safeguards the precious value of Janghang Wetland and passes on a healthy natural environment to future generations while responding to climate change."

Moving forward, Goyang City plans to continue its conservation efforts to enhance the ecological value of Janghang Wetland, building upon the experience of public-private-corporate cooperation accumulated over the past five years.

In addition, the city intends to expand eco-friendly policies as well as opportunities for ecological education and hands-on experiences, enabling citizens to personally appreciate the ecological value of Janghang Wetland and the importance of nature conservation in their daily lives.
