A Celebration of 6-Year-Old Ginseng Awakening Autumn in the DMZ: The 21st Paju Gaeseong Ginseng Festival (Oct. 17–18)

- Enhanced quality control for 6-year-old Paju Gaeseong Ginseng; expanded experiential content including the "Heo Jun Herbal Medicine Shop" and "Moonlight Theater"

- From the "Jangdan Sambaek" National Cooking Contest to the Ginseng Health Marathon: A festival designed for overnight stays, linking agriculture and tourism

Imjingak, a symbol of both division and peace, will be filled with the rich aroma of 6-year-old Paju Gaeseong Ginseng and the vibrant energy of the festival.

Paju City announced that the "21st Paju Gaeseong Ginseng Festival" will be held for two days, from October 17 to 18, at Imjingak Plaza and the Pyeonghwa Nuri Park area.

This year’s festival is themed "Paju Gaeseong Ginseng Festival: Running Together, Enjoying Together, and Leaping Forward Again."

The initiative aims to link agriculture, tourism, and the local economy, transforming Imjingak from a mere border-area tourist spot into a vibrant space where citizens and tourists alike can stay and enjoy themselves.

The highlight of the festival is the Paju Gaeseong Ginseng, strictly selected from 6-year-old crops.

Grown in the climate and environment of the Jangdan-myeon and Gamaksan Mountain areas, Paju Gaeseong Ginseng is characterized by its rich aroma and dense, firm texture.

Paju City is taking steps to boost consumer confidence by selecting only 6-year-old ginseng for the festival and implementing a quality control system that manages the entire process—from cultivation and harvesting to sorting and sealing.

A wider variety of experiential activities and performances will also be available for visitors. The "Jangdan Sambaek Cooking Contest," featuring 25 teams from across the country, will showcase a variety of dishes made with Jangdan soybeans, Gaeseong ginseng, and premium Paju rice.

Making its debut this year is the "Heo Jun Herbal Medicine Village," a space where visitors can experience the history of the *Dongui Bogam* (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine) and ginseng culture.

Two traditional thatched-roof houses have been transformed into a traditional herbal pharmacy and a ginseng tea tasting area; demonstrations—such as the preparation of medicinal herbs—will illustrate how these plants are processed into medicine.

The "Moonlight Theater" will also operate, taking advantage of the nighttime atmosphere at Imjingak.

By screening movies suitable for families, the festival aims to encourage visitors to stay into the evening and extend the event's hours from day to night.

In addition, the festival offers a wide range of attractions and activities throughout the venue, including making ginseng bibimbap, a ginseng health marathon, a live auction titled "Find the Ginseng Master," and various street and stage performances.

At the direct-sales market for agricultural specialties, products such as six-year-old ginseng, Paju-grown produce, processed goods, and local delicacies will be sold at prices 15–20% lower than the market rate.

As a major direct-sales market where approximately 10 tons of ginseng are traded annually, it is expected to help farmers expand their sales channels while offering consumers the opportunity to purchase high-quality local produce at reasonable prices.

Transportation services to enhance visitor convenience are also being improved.

Low-speed "touring cars" will circulate between key points at the Imjingak venue, assisting those with limited mobility—such as the elderly and families with strollers—in getting around the festival grounds. Song Ho-cheol, Head of the Urban Agriculture Division at Paju City, stated, “The Paju Gaeseong Ginseng Festival is a meaningful occasion where farmers share the fruits of six years of dedicated cultivation with citizens.” He added, “We have significantly expanded the program to ensure people of all ages can enjoy the event, and we hope many visitors will come to experience the true value of Paju’s agricultural products firsthand.”

Paju City plans to use this festival—which centers on local specialties known as the “Jangdan Sambaek” (Jangdan-grown rice, soybeans, and ginseng)—to link agriculture with the security and peace-themed tourism resources of Imjingak. The city aims to evolve the event from a purely agriculture-focused festival into a platform for stay-based tourism that fosters the simultaneous growth of local culture, tourism, and the regional economy.
