Goyang City Launches ‘Growing Ilsan Yeolmu for a Month’ Contest; Students Cultivate Appreciation for Agriculture and the Environment
858 students from 18 schools (elementary, middle, and high) participate; growing and harvesting crops in container gardens
Utilizes ‘Recosoil’ donated by POSCO E&C; highlights resource-circulating urban agriculture education
Goyang Special City has officially launched the ‘Growing Ilsan Yeolmu for a Month’ contest, an initiative designed to teach students about the value of agriculture and the environment through the cultivation of ‘Ilsan Yeolmu’ (a local specialty radish variety).
This contest is a school-based urban agriculture program where students experience the entire process of planting, tending, and harvesting Ilsan Yeolmu in container gardens at their schools.
It was organized to allow students to naturally experience the preciousness of life, the importance of healthy food, and the value of local agriculture as they plant seeds and watch the crops grow.
This year, a total of 858 students across 46 groups from 18 local schools—comprising 11 elementary, 4 middle, and 3 high schools—are participating.
Goyang City began the contest operations by distributing cultivation kits sequentially, starting with the elementary division on the 29th, followed by the middle and high school divisions on the 30th.
Each school was provided with three container gardens, Ilsan Yeolmu seeds, fertilizer, and materials for pest and disease management.
Notably, this year’s contest incorporates ‘Recosoil’—an eco-friendly potting soil made from recycled waste materials like coffee grounds and paper—donated by POSCO E&C, to emphasize the significance of the environment and resource circulation.
‘Recosoil’ is an eco-friendly growing medium produced by utilizing discarded resources such as coffee grounds and paper products. Students learn about the relationship between agriculture, the environment, and resource circulation by experiencing firsthand how waste materials are repurposed as resources for growing crops.
To ensure students and teachers face no difficulties during the cultivation process, Goyang City provides a guidebook and educational videos covering every step from sowing to harvesting.
The *Ilsan Yeolmu* (young summer radishes) carefully cultivated by students over the course of a month will be collected from each school by the Agricultural Technology Center, then displayed and judged at the Urban Agriculture Festival.
Final rankings will be determined based on the weight of five harvested *Ilsan Yeolmu* plants; in the event of a tie in weight, length will serve as the deciding factor.
Top-performing students and groups will receive prizes such as educational plant-growing kits, Kawaji Rice (a local specialty), and *Ilsan Apple Farm* water jelly.
All participating students will also have the opportunity to make kimchi using the *Ilsan Yeolmu* they harvested themselves.
An official from the Goyang City Agricultural Technology Center stated, "We hope students will realize the value of agriculture by experiencing the entire process from planting seeds to harvesting crops." The official added, "In particular, we hope the use of resource-circulating potting soil serves as an opportunity for them to reflect on the importance of the environment and resources, alongside agriculture itself."
Through this program, Goyang City plans to go beyond simple farming experiences to establish an educational model that combines a local specialty crop—*Ilsan Yeolmu*—with eco-friendly resource circulation, thereby teaching future generations about the value of sustainable agriculture and the environment.
