Goyang Special City Partners with Taxi Drivers and Police to Improve Traffic and Cut Commute Times by 30 Minutes

Urgent traffic issues to be prioritized for police safety review; rapid response via "fast-track" process

Goyang Special City has launched a full-scale, field-oriented initiative to improve daily traffic conditions, aiming to quickly resolve inconveniences and reduce commute times for residents.

On the 28th, the city held a "Town Hall Meeting on Traffic Environment Improvement to Cut Commute Times by 30 Minutes" at City Hall. The event was attended by approximately 30 people, including taxi drivers, city transportation officials, and police officers responsible for traffic safety reviews.

The meeting was organized to flesh out the "Traffic Innovation Together, Economic Circulation City" initiative—a core transportation policy of the current administration—and to identify practical traffic improvements that residents can truly feel in their daily lives.

The meeting utilized a "one-stop feedback" format: individual and corporate taxi drivers and union representatives—who navigate the city's roads daily—highlighted areas with chronic congestion and specific traffic inconveniences, while city and police officials immediately assessed the feasibility of improvements on-site.

Key topics of discussion included optimizing signal systems and coordination in congested areas, realigning dangerous road sections, adjusting lane layouts, and expanding traffic safety facilities.

Among these, the city plans to fast-track measures that allow for immediate action, such as adjusting intersection lanes or improving signal timing at bottleneck points.

The city intends to submit these items as priority agenda items to the local police traffic safety review committee, thereby accelerating the pace of traffic improvements that residents can experience firsthand. Goyang City plans to expand the scope of this town hall meeting beyond a one-off event, transforming it into a comprehensive transportation innovation initiative that encompasses everything from improving daily commuting conditions to expanding public transit and railway networks.

To address commuting demand, the city will first establish 30 new "Goyang Pyeonha-G Bus" routes and implement a route reorganization centered on local shuttle buses in the first half of 2027.

It will also expand the operation of "Ttok-Bus"—an on-demand transport service—and optimize traffic signal efficiency using an AI-based Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

In the mid-to-long term, the city envisions establishing an integrated transportation system that encompasses roads, buses, and railways by seamlessly executing railway network construction projects.

Min Gyeong-seon, Mayor of Goyang Special City, stated, "The success of our transportation policy hinges on how quickly we identify and resolve the traffic congestion, transfer inconveniences, and transit 'blind spots' that citizens face daily." He added, "We will promptly address even minor inconveniences on the ground to give citizens back their valuable time."

Goyang City intends to continuously gather feedback from the field and link improvements in daily commuting, public transit innovation, and railway network expansion to concretely achieve its transportation innovation goal: reducing commute times by more than 30 minutes.
