Goyang City Launches 'Reading with a Baby Bump,' a Picture Book Group for Expectant Mothers

Registration opens on the 16th on a first-come, first-served basis; 100 participants to be recruited (10 per time slot).

Goyang Special City has launched a recruitment drive for "Reading with a Baby Bump," a small-group gathering where expectant mothers can socialize through picture books. Registration begins at 10:00 AM on the 16th via the Goyang City Library Center website and will continue on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots are filled.

The program involves groups of ten expectant mothers reading picture books together and sharing their personal experiences and thoughts. Beyond mere reading, the goal is to help participants naturally get to know one another and expand their local social networks.

To accommodate expectant mothers who may struggle to find time due to work or household chores, the schedule has been carefully planned to offer a variety of options. Sessions are available on weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings, as well as on weekends, with ten participants selected for each time slot; applicants can choose the time that best fits their daily routine.

"Reading with a Baby Bump" serves as the starting point for Goyang City’s family support project, "Celebrating 100 Births with Goyang: Goyang Grows." Designed to foster bonds between parents starting from pregnancy and ensure local community support through childbirth and early infancy, the initiative will be followed in November by an "Expectant Parents' Prenatal Class" and a "Picture Book Parenting School." Instructors for the parenting school will include Jeon Eun-ju, Kim Ji-eun, Han Mi-hwa, and Kim Su-yeon. A special lecture on child education featuring Dr. Kim Su-yeon is also scheduled for December. Following childbirth, support will continue through library programs designed for infants and toddlers; the initiative will conclude with a gathering where participating families can come together to celebrate the birth and growth of their babies.

The program was organized through a collaboration between the Goyang City Population Policy Team, Juyeop Children's Library, and the Maternal and Child Health Team at the Ilsanseo-gu Public Health Center. Goyang Dongbu Saemaul Geumgo provided backing; having supported local families with childbirth-celebration baby savings accounts since 2020, the institution once again participated as a sponsor.

Mayor Min Gyeong-seon stated, "It is important for the community to connect and offer support from the very time a family prepares for a child's birth." He added, "I hope this program serves as a starting point where expectant mothers find strength through books and maintain a lasting connection with the local community even after giving birth."
