Paju Gwangtan Library to Host 'World Book & Food Festival' on the 13th
"An Opportunity to Learn About Neighbors' Cultures Through Books and Food"
On the 13th, Paju City will host the "World Book & Food Festival" (a play on words combining "Book Fair" and the Korean word for pan-fried dishes, *jeon*) at Gwangtan Library, bringing together multicultural neighbors and local residents. Organized to coincide with "Reading Month" (September) and the upcoming Chuseok holiday, the event aims to foster connection and mutual understanding among neighbors from diverse backgrounds through the shared mediums of books and food.
Running from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, the festival will utilize various spaces within the library—including the "Gwangtan Maru" and outdoor courtyard on the first floor and the creative studio on the third floor. Approximately 100 participants, including local residents and migrants from multicultural backgrounds, will take part. The event is organized by Gwangtan Library and its steering committee, with additional support from Geumchon Rainbow Small Library, "House of Shalom," and local workshops.
Hands-on activities will allow participants to prepare signature dishes from various countries—including Korea, Japan, Indonesia, the United States, and Italy—while related books showcasing the unique dining cultures of these nations will also be on display.
The program features a wide array of activities, including a mini-concert performed by children from migrant families; sessions to learn traditional games from Mongolia, Japan, and China; educational workshops on opening bank accounts and preventing financial fraud; a craft session making *Taegeuk*-patterned keychains; and free medical checkups for multicultural families, provided in collaboration with "House of Shalom," an organization supporting local migrant workers.
Lee In-sook, Director of Munsan Library, expressed her hope that the event would serve as a venue for residents to come together as one and gain a broader understanding of diverse cultures.
