Paju City Holds Preparatory Meeting for 3rd Public Forum on Spatial Transformation of Prostitution Clusters
3rd Preparatory Meeting Held… Discussing Directions for Transformation After Dissolution Based on Local History and Residents’ Lives
“Must Approach Broadly, Going Beyond Demolition and Renovation to Preserving Memories and Restoring the Community”
Paju City is accelerating preparations for a public forum to explore a new future for the region following the dissolution of prostitution clusters.
Paju City announced that it held the 3rd preparatory meeting for the ‘Public Forum on the Transformation of Prostitution Clusters into Living Spaces’ at the Geumchon Eoullim Center on the 3rd. During the meeting, participants reviewed the historical context of the area and exchanged various opinions regarding the future direction of spatial transformation.
Presentations and discussions were held under the theme of ‘The History and Transformation of Areas Surrounding Paju City’s Prostitution Clusters.’
Attendees did not limit themselves to viewing the prostitution clusters merely as physical spaces requiring demolition and renovation; instead, they examined their historical and humanistic significance from the perspective that they are spaces where regional changes and the lives of residents have accumulated over a long period.
In particular, the meeting analyzed the background of the formation of the red-light district and the changes in the surrounding living areas, and explored the impact of future spatial transformation on the local community as well as desirable directions for development.
The participants agreed that the tasks following the dismantling of the red-light district should not be limited to simple demolition and environmental cleanup.
They emphasized the need for comprehensive consideration of how to preserve the history and memories remaining in the region, how to continue the lives of existing residents, and furthermore, how to restore the community and create new regional values.
Local residents also directly participated in the meeting to convey their voices from the field.
As participation from residents and stakeholders gradually expands through repeated preparatory meetings, Paju City plans to establish a foundation for operating a public forum capable of incorporating diverse opinions in a balanced manner.
Kim Young-mi, Head of the Women and Family Division of Paju City, stated, "The preparatory meeting is a preliminary step to formalize various proposals regarding the prostitution district and coordinate key agendas to be discussed at the public forum." She added, "Since anyone—including residents, stakeholders, and civic groups—can freely participate and have equal rights to speak, I ask that you share your valuable opinions for the transformation of the region." Paju City plans to continue to widely gather opinions from citizens and the local community and continuously provide a forum for public discourse for the spatial and social transformation of prostitution clusters.
